Hwy. 60 wreck kills 2, hurts 2

Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Two from Morehouse were killed and an Essex mother and son sustained moderate injuries in a Tuesday evening wreck on Highway 60 in New Madrid County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The patrol responded to a call at Highway E and U.S. 60 at about 7:30 p.m. where 74-year-old Winford R. Towe, and 68-year-old Betty L. Vaught were pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident occurred when a 2004 Jeep, driven by Candy M Harper, 37, of Essex, was westbound on U.S. 60 near Morehouse and struck the northbound Towe vehicle when Towe failed to yield to traffic on Hwy. 60. The Towe vehicle was struck in the passenger side door by westbound Harper vehicle.

New Madrid County Coroner Jimmy McSpadden pronounced both Morehouse residents dead at the scene of the wreck. Candy Harper, and son, Skyler W Harper, 13, were both transported to a Sikeston medical facility by ambulance.

Skyler Harper is a seventh grade student at Richland Schools in Essex.

The deaths mark the 46th and 47th fatalities in Troop E in 2009.
