Hyslop honored by MSTA

Wednesday, October 7, 2009
Daily Statesman Editor Noreen Hyslop has been awarded three of four awards presented annually to Missouri newspapers by the Missouri State Teachers Association for excellence in educational coverage over the past year.

MSTA annually awards writers across the state for coverage in the areas of feature writing, photography, general coverage, and editorials.

Hyslop received awards in writing, photography and general coverage and was presented her honors at last week's MSTA Regional meeting held in the ballroom of Southeast Missouri State University.

The feature award was presented for an article in the summer of 2008 entitled, "Summer students learn lesson from young wildlife enthusiast," featuring a young Dexter student.

The photography award was granted for a photo called "Science is Fun," taken in March of this year at Southwest Elementary School during a Science Relay event sponsored by the Bootheel Youth Museum at Malden.

The award for general coverage was earned for coverage of Dexter's Board of Education, in particular for an article entitled "Board continues support for funding formula change."

Hyslop, who spent 27 years employed within the Dexter School System before stepping into the newspaper business, stated, "Educators and the educational system will always have a special place in my heart. To receive these awards from the organization that represents our educational system is a very special gift to me, and I am truly touched and appreciative of these honors."

Bon Scott...

I was first a classroom aide in an LD classroom, but spent the last 15 years as elementary secretary at Southwest School....and loved every minute of it!
