Statesman earns nine MPA awards

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Winners of the 2009 Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest were announced this week at the MPA Convention held at Lake of the Ozarks and The Daily Statesman fared well among the competition.

Nine awards in all were granted to The Statesman and additionally three awards were earned by the staff of The Statesman's sister paper, The North Stoddard Countian in Bloomfield.

The Statesman took second place for Best Newspaper Design and Designer Debbie Lack was awarded third place for her entry in the Front Page Design division.

Additionally, Noreen Hyslop won third place for her feature, "Missouri Loses a Leader," a story about the loss of Mike Keathley, a Dexter resident who served under the administration of Gov. Matt Blunt and lost his life to cancer.

Corey Noles was awarded a second place winning for his photo of a Bloomfield fireman taken at a home fire near Bloomfield last year.

Mike McCoy earned Honorable Mention in the category of Best News Photo for his photograph of the Richland Schools' bus crash last fall.

The Statesman's annual Progress Edition is published in March of each year and the 2008 edition, entitled, "Beyond Hometown Roots," earned third place from the judges selections. The edition was a joint effort of all staffwriters at the paper.

Mike McCoy earned two additional awards, a second place and a third. McCoy's story about local business owner Ted Denkins sporting goods operation earned second place in the Best Business Story category. Taking third was McCoy's entry in Best Rural Life/Ag Story on Hydroponics.

A third place award in the category of Best Education Story landed Hyslop another award for her feature called, "Blunt fields questions from first graders," a humorous slant on a 2008 visit to a local elementary school from then Gov. Blunt.

The North Stoddard Countian earned two second place awards for Corey Noles' in the contest's Best News Photo category and in the Best News Story division.

"All in all, these awards represent a tremendous amount of work from our staff and the credit is well-deserved," said Publisher Bud Hunt of this week's presentations.

"Several of the awards were presented for projects that involved many staff members, and while each individual award is a special achievement, these joint projects also mean that there is a wonderful cooperative spirit at the paper and that credit goes to every member of The Daily Statesman staff."

One word: Fantastic! I am proud of both the Statesman and the North Stoddard Countian. I've seen a lot of improvements in both since we moved to Stoddard County back in Sept of '96. Congratulations to each person who won awards for our papers.

Swift, the North Stoddard Countian BEGAN in 1996. Before that, there were two papers - the Advance Statesman and the Bloomfield Vindicator.

Thanks, GL. I had heard that. Forgive me for my obvious ignorance on this! LOL! We still enjoy reading the North Stoddard Countian even though we moved to Dexter from Bloomfield in '07. When we moved to Advance Sept of '96 we bought a copy of North Stoddard Countian and have loved it ever since. I know we'd still be considered as newcomers compared to those of y'all who've lived here all your lives, but we consider ourselves as Stoddard Countians. The papers are so informative and so interesting. Getting on the internet has helped the Statesman, and I figure it will also help the North Stoddard Countian.
