Bloomfield notched its first of the season over Bell City Friday in the finals of the SCAA tournament at Richland High School.
"Our players came out strong the first set and even stronger the second set," Bloomfield coach Starla Pulley said of her varsity squad. "They played with a lot of intensity. We had some great passes, sets and kills. The third set we couldn't find our momentum and nothing really clicked, but we came out and won it in the fourth game."
Pulley said she moved Courtney Delay up to the varsity unit for the Bell City match and the sophomore responded with a team-high 10 kills. Lindsay Hutchison, Erica Wyatt and Megan Pulley each had seven kills while Taylor Parker finished with six.
Parker also charted five blocks, while Pulley and Wyatt added four and three, respectively.
Taylor Pulley was tops in assists with 36, while Che' Holford and Lindsay Levitt each had 12 digs for the night, followed by Fuwell and Hutchison each with seven
The match was a best-of-five format because Bell City doesn't field a junior varsity team.
Bloomfield improved its record to 23-5 on the season and will next be in action Thursday at Zalma, followed by district play on Monday.

Bloomfield is hot at the right time of the year. If they could find a way to get past Scott City I think they would be on their way to Kansas City. It's really hard to put your money on anybody besides Scott City. But maybe Scott City has a tougher road to Kansas City than what many people thought a few weeks ago. I really like Bloomfield's chances in upcoming seasons. Time will tell what happens this year.
One additional note. I am glad to see the best-of-five format utilized in this game. Hopefully, the format will soon be mandatory for all varsity games in Missouri. Some coaches and administrators are against the format because they feel the format would create travel issues and long nights for student athletes. I personally believe volleyball games would still end at approximately the same time as basketball games. The state of Arkansas already utilizes the best-of-five format. I like the format because it places a greater emphasis on conditioning, adds excitement to the games and prepares student athletes to play the best-of-five format at the college level.
I will say that going to a 5 set match would create an environment where JV and Varsity games would not be able to be played on the same nights. The games could end well past 10:00pm putting students who travel home extremely late, and allowing them much more limited time to get work for school completed. There would have to be separate schedules for JV and Varsity and this would require more coaches, more buses, etc. Many of the SMALL schools would suffer and the coaches at those schools might be coaching 5 nights a week....tough for those folks...been there, done that.
