Dexter striving for upset against talented Potosi squad

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
There have plenty of tough challenges thrown at the Dexter Bearcats this season but Wednesday's Class 3 playoff game against Potosi will probably top the list.

Dexter (5-5) played its way into the playoff picture with two convincing wins to end the season and the reward will be a matchup with the undefeated Potosi Trojans, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3.

No one can mention Potosi without singing the praises of senior running back Brandon Bourbon, who has already hinted he will play football for Stanford University. Boubon (6'1", 210-lb) has rolled up over 2,100 yards on the ground and scored 28 touchdowns while leading the Trojans to ten wins this season.

Potosi eased through the first eight games of the season while hardly breaking a sweat before encountering adversity against Ste. Genevieve in a triple overtime win, 54-48, in week nine. In that game, it was reported that Boubon missed most of the second half and overtime with an injury.

Dexter played arguably its best game of the season in a 30-25 loss to the Dragons in the season opener. Ste. Genevieve went on to only win one more game, but the Dragons' "Wildcat" passing attack, coupled with the absence of Bounbon, had the Dragons on the verge of the upset of the season. Potosi finished off its perfect compaign with a 20-6 win over Park Hills Central.

Dexter can only hope to contain Boubon and make the Trojans put the ball in the air, which they are very capable of doing behind the passing of Matt Marler (58-of-113 for 1097 yards and 14 touchdowns). He will be looking down field for a trio of talented receivers, Garth Rogers, Dylan Eye and Tanner Glore.

Dexter will answer offensively with its own potent passing attack. Senior Ben Mills has quietly put together a stellar season, completing 85-of-167 passes for 1,314 yards. He also has a trio of receivers to look for. Seniors Gary Summers and Ryan Windham have shown to be reliable at the wide-out positions while junior Morgan Hedrick has emerged as a big target from his tight end position.

Dexter, which won five of its last six games, is coming off its two best defensive efforts of the season, barely missing a second straight shutout when the Kennett Indians scored late against the second unit.

A tough early-season schedule should help a young Bearcats team be ready for the Trojans, but Potosi is the real deal and will be heavly favored to win this game.

Wednesday's playoff game will get underway at 7 p. m. at Potosi.
