Hampton and Son Construction of Poplar Bluff is renovating the train depot in downtown Dexter. The project was awarded to Hampton Construction at a cost of $221,997. Work began earlier this fall with both the inside and outside of the depot to be repaired and restored. A heavy equipment operator breaks up the concrete slab that was the base of the storage building near the depot, while workers pour concrete for the handicapped accessible sidewalk. The total cost of the project will be $257,947. Workers are in the process of installing new electrical wiring, plumbing and new dry wall on the inside of the depot. The project calls for the installation of a new HVAC system, new electrical system and complete interior renovations. The kitchenette and restrooms also will be modernized and restored. The plan calls for repairs to damaged brick on the building followed by a good cleaning without removing the masonry. The exterior will also be repainted.

What are the plans for this building?
No plans, Dexter just loves to have public meeting places.
It's supposed to serve as a type of museum, from what I've heard. But that was also the plans for the caboose in the same vicinity, and it just sits there and does nothing. You can't even get in it, and I've never seen anyone give a tour. Who knows w/ Dexter...just another way to spend money we don't have!
Shame on you! That depot is a wonderful part of Dexter's history. Our town tore down their depot long ago, as with all the other old "useless" buildings, and now we have NO HISTORY!
I like the idea of putting it to use and keeping it. Abilene has over the years restored several historic buildings here in town. One of them was the depot...it is now the visitor's center. I wish I could send you photos of some of these buildings..they are beautiful.
