First Commercial Bank President Norman Harty made a statement recently when he placed this round bale of hay at the front entrance of the Dexter branch on Market and Catalpa Streets. Harty, who refused the recent federal "bail-out" money offered for his banks, illustrated his point by displaying the sign on this "bale" that told passersby that FCB didn't need a federal "bale-out."
Everyone knows your rich Norman...no need to make a sign and tack it to a hay bale. Goodness Gracious.
I believe Norman is trying to make a much bigger statement than that.....if he can refuse bail out money, so can most other banks, truth be told. He has too much honor & pride to take hand outs when not needed.....much like most other banks also.
I do not know Mr. Harty but I understand his message and applaud his personal code of honor. If all banks were to be responsible for their own business, then they wouldn't have to hold out their hands for Federal help. The community needs to support people like Mr. Harty, as the true Americans that they represent.
