Three Dexter residents are behind bars today following arrests made in two separate investigations by the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department.

According to reports, a search warrant was served on Nov. 29 at 203 S. Clements in Dexter following a three-month long investigation.

The location was the home of Keith and Katherine Craft.

According to the complaint filed by Sheriff's Deputy Keith Haynes, both a "shake and bake" meth lab and a quantity of methamphetamine were discovered in an upstairs bedroom. He also stated that both used and clean needles were located in the room.

He also said that a bottle with plastic tubing attached, known as a generator, was in the room "emitting a gas."

"The lab contained volatile chemicals that are dangerous when not handled properly, clearly putting the Craft's three children at risk," Haynes wrote in the complaint.

The children's bedrooms were located on the same floor as the lab.

Haynes stated that Keith Craft admitted to making methamphetamine in the room earlier that same day.

Both Keith and Katherine are charged with the Class B felony of manufacturing methamphetamine, the Class C felony of possession of methamphetamine, the Class D felony of possession of drug paraphernalia, the Class C felony of possession of precursors to the manufacture of meth and the Class C felony of endangering the welfare of a child.

Both are currently being held in the Stoddard County Jail awaiting a $35,000 cash only bond.

In an unrelated incident, Haynes and other officers served a search warrant on the Dexter home of Ruben "Don" Prunty on Monday.

Located at the residence were seven individual packages of various weights. Haynes also located six individual packages of marijuana ready for sale weighing various amounts.

Drug paraphernalia including a spoon with residue were also found at the home.

"After being advised of his rights, Prunty admitted to being involved in the distribution of both crystal methamphetamine and marijuana," Haynes stated in his report.

Prunty is charged with the Class B felony of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, the Class C felony of possession of a controlled substance and the Class A misdemeanor of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

"The results of these investigations indicate that both crystal methamphetamine, as well as homemade "shake and bake" methamphetamine are present in Stoddard County," said Haynes, who is the Stoddard County Deputy also assigned to the SEMO Drug Task Force.

Sheriff Carl Hefner explained that over the last year or so methamphetamine arrests had slowed in the area making way for prescription drug abuse. In the past six months, however, that trend has begun to change and officers are after it full-force.

Most of the crystal methamphetamine in the area comes in from Mexico, according to Haynes.

Hefner said that the crystal meth is not always considered to be as strong as the "homemade" meth because it has often been cut with other agents that have diluted the product.

The "shake and bake" method is not as easy for officers to detect, he explained.

"Now they can get in their car for a couple hours and make their own meth," Hefner said. "Doing it this way doesn't produce quite the smell that the traditional method does."

The traditional, or "Nazi" method includes anhydrous ammonia as an ingredient and involves more risk and difficulty to make.

"A person can get every ingredient to manufacture methamphetamine with one trip to WalMart or any similar store," Haynes said Thursday afternoon.

The SEMO Drug Task Force, Dexter Police Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol assisted the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department in the arrests.

Great job DPD and Semo Drug Task Force !! I hope they get some help and that the families feel safer. Money may be tight now days but there are other ways to get it, "THE LEGAL WAY " without putting someone in danger. There were kids in both houses weren't there ?

Good job, law enforcement; now let's get them prosecuted to the extent the law allows! no money under the table or plea bargaining for lesser sentences. These folks endangered children and their neighborhood!

Ten to one, I betcha most of these area meth lab makers are descendents of bootleggers. Research it; I bet I'm right!

hey for all it is worth don prunty is my brother and everbody makes mistakes so those who live in glass houses should not throw stones and for your information mabey you shouuld do a little more research my daddy or my mother were not boot leggers and another little thing i am proud of my family so mabey you should clean out your own closets

i am retired from law enforcement. all people that make mistakes are not bad people. and also it is not right to pass judgment on their familys when you do not even know them. i have arrested probably a 1000 dealers and users, most of them just made a mistake which they paid for and went on to lead productive lives. usually the ones that make rash hurt full judgements are hiding something. so quit looking for something to be self righteous about and let the law do their job. thank you, by the way i retired as a lt. detective, head person over c.i.d.

I believe that Mr. Prunty was a working man, wasn't he? If he is the man I think he is, he used to do business with the apartments I lived in. He NEVER appeared "messed up" nor was he ever unpleasant.

I believe that a lot of us make mistakes that we carry guilt and shame for. Carrying that guilt and shame for a long, long time. It is not our place to judge people but to try to help them.

Cooking meth in a house with kids is NOT a MISTAKE, it's a choice and a very stupid one at that. It took a conscious decision and an act of will to set up the lab. NO MISTAKE.

I can't believe the outpouring of sympathy for a group of cooks! What if the house or car had blown up and the kids died, guess that would just be a mistake.

I guess they were just doing their part to take the money out of the hands of the Mexican drug lords, just make your own! Mistake my behind.

i guess you are one of the perfect ones if you are halalua to you but just remember you dont know what your family might be doing behind your back so i would be careful what i wish for it might come back to bite you in your big old mistake dbjb in arkansas

dbjb, hopefully your brother will get his life together while he is doing time. Being arrested was the best thing that could have ever happened to him, if he is smart enough to see it. You on the other hand need to chill out, if people want to despise drugs, users, and makers, that is our choice.

Keith and Katherine Craft are currently being held in the Stoddard County Jail awaiting a $35,000 cash only bond AND Ruben "Don" Prunty is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

MAYBE IF HE (PRUNTY) HAD ENDANGERED THE WELFARE OF SOME KIDS, HIS BOND WOULD HAVE BEEN LOWER..... YA THINK?????

-- Posted by sweet on Sat, Dec 5, 2009, at 10:55 AM

And Keith you look really really bad...... Get some help while you have the chance. I will pray for you and your family.

-- Posted by sweet on Sat, Dec 5, 2009, at 10:56 AM

dbjb: My bad! It was just something I had wondered about a long time, ie is it possible that at least some meth lab operators are descendents of bootleggers? You answered my question!

That being said, drug makers and sellars are a danger to the community and, in this case, children. They should be prosecuted to the extent the law allows without all the plea bargains and money under the table junk that usually goes on! Which leads me to say this: The two most important office holders in any county are the Sheriff and the Prosecutor. Our sheriff and his department appear to be doing a great job! Keep up the good work! Actually they are the ones who really need our prayers, because they are constantly putting themselves in harm's way.

i fully agree with the law on drugs i am very against drugs i hate them and they ruin peoples lives i know don made a concious decision to use them it is stupid i will be the first one to tell him so but he didnt do it with children around dosent make it right but people with these problems need help it is a very bad addiction and yes i think people do make mistakes but also need help not to be condemed because of it so i think i dont need so do gooder to tell me to chill it could happen to you and then it might not be so funny dbjb arkansas

yeah i wonder about the bond issue tooo? kinda strange there.... how do they get the price range on those?

-- Posted by BootheelBoogieMan on Sat, Dec 5, 2009, at 5:39 PM

People need to stay from that stuff, it's not good for anyone to breathe the air around it expecially children , shame on you to get yourselves in this situation. Personally I don't understand the need to be making or selling this crap , I hope they get their lives right with god and maybe it will make a differance. Thank you law enforcement for keeping up the GREAT work!

No,I'm FAR from perfect, and some would say even functional, but I have NEVER stored explosives around my kids!

With my big mouth I mess up at least twice a day, I smoke,I drink some times and have a permanent foul mood. I know Don and a "mistake" doesn't last 20 years! Hope he gets off the boof! And I'm sorry but the lab in the house or car thing to me is just nuts!

-- Posted by bobby wayne on Sat, Dec 5, 2009, at 10:31 PM

I agree with bobby wayne....people who are cooking meth are not making mistakes, they know what they are doing and continue to do so until they get caught. Unfortunately only a few make a lifestyle change and get off the drugs for good. Hopefully all of these folks will learn a lesson and do just that. I am not judging, just stating my opinion. I don't try to blame others for the bad choices I have made in my life, everyone has to be accountable for the things they choose to do.

You know it just bothers me how one day, you can have everything together and then BAM decide to make the wrong decisions. I have know Prunty for many years and he had it all together and had no idea that this was going on. He was a very hard working man, that would do anything for most anyone. I don't like drugs either and I believe that they should be punished as well but compared two these cases the time isn't right, if a child wasn't there. I believe it would be good for Prunty to get some help for his actions that he has done. I hope that his family can get thru the holidays.

IHOPE DON FINDS THE RIGHT ROAD. HE IS A FINE MAN WHO HAS GOTTEN OFF ON THE WRONG WAY OF LIVING. HE STOOD UP FOR ME ONCE WHEN SOME PEOPLE IN DEXTER WERE TELLING VICIOUS LIES ABOUT ME, SO NOW I WOULD LIKE TO DO THE SAME FOR HIM. HE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE, BUT LETS ALL PRAY THAT HE LEARNS, AND TURNS HIS LIFE AROUND.GOD LOVES HIM, AND WANTS HIM TO BE ALL THAT HE CAN BE IN CHRIST.
