Photo courtesy of Paul Davis/DAR It is unknown why an Arkansas woman, headed east on Highway 60 between the two Poplar Bluff exits Tuesday morning, traveled across the median and struck a westbound vehicle driven by Jack W. Vaughn, 41, of Dexter. Vaughn's vehicle then struck a semi, also westbound. Vaughn and the Arkansas woman were both killed in the wreck.
A Dexter man and an Arkansas woman were killed in a wreck shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday that shut down a stretch of Highway 60 to westbound traffic for much of the morning.

Jack W. Vaughn, 41, was reportedly westbound in a 1999 Dodge on US 60 about two miles east of Poplar Bluff when an eastbound vehicle driven by 53-year-old Carol A. Cook of Evening Shade, Ark. crossed the median and struck the Vaughn vehicle. Vaughn, in turn, struck a 1998 Peterbilt tractor trailer, also westbound, driven by Johnny L. Counts, 57, of Winona. Counts sustained minor injuries in the wreck.

Both Vaughn and Cook were pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Assistant Coroner Joe Chapman. Their deaths mark the 72nd and 73rd fatalities of the year in Troop E.

This is so strange and sad. I wonder what happened to make her cross the median? Prayers go out for both families.

This tragedy wasn't in ny mother's hands, but in God's. She respected life, which was shown through her dedication to her children.

My mom was on her way to pick up my brother. She had to have left quite early in the morning. I know she wasn't feeling well, but she was doing her duty as a mother. My prayers go out to the Vaughn family, and any informaton on the accident, about my mother... would be appreciated.
