Michael G. Warren, Jr.

Saturday, January 9, 2010

A celebration of the life of 21-year-old Michael Gene Warren, Jr. was held Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the St. Simons Community Church. He went to be with his Savior as the result of an automobile accident just outside Greensboro, Ga., on Dec. 31, 2009.

A life long resident of St. Simons Island, Ga., Michael was a proud member of Glynn Academy's class of 2006, graduating with high honors and voted most involved by his classmates.

He was a member of the Glynn Academy Tennis Team, Debate Team, Model United Nations Team, and participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes in addition to numerous other activities. At the time of his accident, he was entering his last semester at the University of Georgia and would have graduated in May with degrees in religion and psychology.

Michael had visited Peru and Japan on mission trips and planned to pursue opportunities in either campus ministry or the mission field upon graduation.

He was currently working at the Ramsey Center at UGA. The past two summer's Michael had served as a college intern with The Gathering Place.

He had also worked for the Sea Island Company on Junior Staff in the summer of 2007.

Michael was very involved with St. Simons Community Church, The Gathering Place, The University of Georgia Wesley Foundation, SWAT (Students With A Testimony) and a member of the Chilly Dawgs, an ultimate frisbee club team at the University of Georgia.

He enjoyed playing any sport but truly loved tennis, golf, snow skiing, swing dancing and ultimate frisbee. Michael's appetite for reading, music and movies was well known by those that knew him. He also loved to travel, having been to 23 states, Washington, D.C. and Canada.

Michael had also visited Italy and Greece the summer before his senior year of high school and was working on his Dad for the money to travel to South Africa this year for the World Cup, even though he knew he would probably not be able to get a ticket for the event!

Michael was born July 22, 1988, the first child of Mike and Lisa Warren of St. Simons Island, Ga. In addition to his parents, his sister, Stacey Warren, also of St. Simons Island, Ga., survives him. Other survivors are his maternal grandparents, Edward and Cindy Strickland of St. Simons Island, Ga.; maternal grandmother, Susan Moore of Bradenton, Fla.; paternal grandfather, Larry Warren of Bloomfield; an uncle, Gary Strickland of St. Simons Island, Ga.; an aunt, Wendy Warren of Jesup, Ga.; and numerous great-aunts; great-uncles; and cousins.

His paternal grandmother, Leonice Warren of Jesup, Ga., preceded Michael in death.

The family is in the process of establishing a foundation in Michael's memory to provide financial assistance to college students who have a heart for spreading the gospel in foreign countries.

Contributions can be made in Michael's name to Frederica Baptist Church, 1700 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, Ga. 31522.

The Church will transfer any contributions to the foundation once it is established.
