Mr. Harris had lived in Bloomfield all his life. He was a lifetime farmer and a member of the First General Baptist Church in Bloomfield. He served as a board member of the Bloomfield School System from 1961 to 1973, and served as board president for several years. From 1975 to 1982 he drove a school bus. For many years he served as president of the Bloomfield Cemetery Associaton. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan and a very dedicated Bloomfield basketball fan not missing a game until his health failed. In 2009 the Bloomfield Athletic Association started an annual outstanding athlete award in his honor. Most of all he enjoyed hunting with his two sons.
On Sept. 21, 1946, he was married to Peggy Douglas in Bloomfield.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Harris of Bloomfield; two sons, Larry Harris of Naples, Fla., Don and Leta Harris of Florence, Ala.; grandchildren, April Dawn Harris of Florence, Alabama, Lora Ann & Cody Ralston of West Weatherford, Texas, Jeremy Don and Jessica Harris of Mobile, Ala., Heather Raye Harris of Naples, Florida; great grandchildren, Chelsie Harris of Naples, Florida, Ty and Dylan Ralston, both of Weatherford, Texas; one sister, Louisa and Seldon Quick of Bloomfield; and a special little girl that called him PaPaw, Abby Jarrell. Other relatives and many friends survive to mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Shawnna Renea Harris on Jan. 28, 1986, and two sisters, Ivah Harris and Derotha Hutchison.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 25, 2010, from 5-8 p.m. at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield.
Funeral services will be on Friday, March 26, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the First General Baptist Church in Bloomfield with the Rev. Kevin Eskew of Bloomfield officiating.
Interment will be in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield in charge of arrangements.
