Billy Joe Mekan was born on Oct. 30, 1932, in rural Dexter to Albert John Andrew Mekan and Stella Pearl Irvin Mekan and died at his residence in Fisk on March 30, 2010, at the age of 77.

He was united in marriage to Pauline Hines in Poplar Bluff on June 10, 2000.

Billy Joe was raised on a farm in the Vinson community outside of Dexter. He remained a farmer at heart throughout his life. Billy worked as a foreman both at Brown Shoe Company in Bernie, and later, at Tri-Conduit Cable and Wire in Sikeston. After moving to Colorado in the late seventies, Billy worked as a mechanic for the Mass Transit Department for the city of Denver, a job he held and loved until retiring.

Billy Joe had many friends in Southeast Missouri and Colorado and was known for his love of hard work, music, dancing, metal sculpting and gardening.

Billy Joe is survived by his wife, Pauline Hines of the home. He is also survived by seven children, Billie Jean Mekan Owens Slusher of Bernie, Mary Jo Mekan Franks of Greenville S.C., Angelina Marie Mekan Jenkins of Greenville, S.C., Kathleen Louise Mekan Huffman of Englewood, Colo., Thomas Albert Mekan of Englewood, Colo., Linora Christine Mekan Furlong of Lakewood Colo., and John Andrew Mekan of Denver, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. His daughter, Brenda Sue Mekan Hargrove is deceased.

Billy Joe is survived by three step-children, John W. Doyle of Phoenix, Ariz., Ronald Gene Doyle of Stonebridge, Ohio, and Karen Belz of Davidsburg, Mich.

He is survived by two sisters, Martha Christine Russell of Jefferson City and Emma Louise Fortner Sullivan of Bernie. His one brother, John Milton Mekan preceded Billy Joe in death.

Visitation will be held at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie on Friday, April 2, 2010, from 5-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 1 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Ivan Mekan will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery.
