Maxine Culbertson, daughter of the late Lewis Garner and Della Cross Garner, was born Oct. 31, 1920 at Powe and died in the Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Center in Dexter on April 14, 2010 at the age of 89.

She was united in marriage to Ottie Culbertson on Sept. 24, 1938 at Bloomfield. Mr. Culbertson preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1988.

She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Dexter, a lifelong resident of Stoddard County along with her husband, Ottie. They celebrated their life and love in several entrepreneurial endeavors. After marriage, they were row crop farmers, expanding it into a dairy farm. Although she was an important part of the management and labor force on the farm, she attended nursing school and earned her LPN license. She gained experience working at the Dexter Hospital and Comeau Clinic, giving her the opportunity to open and operate several extended care facilities in and around the Dexter area, including Culbertson's Rest Home, from which she retired.

She is survived by nephews/foster sons, Jerry Garner of Springfield, Ill., Dale Garner and wife, Linda of Wheeler, Texas, Dennis Garner and wife, Linda of Flint, Mich.; by a very special friend, Lorene Thomason of Dexter; by other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many friends and acquaintances in the Dexter area.

Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010. Visitation will the then be held from 9 am.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010. Graveside services will then be conducted following the visitation at the Hagy Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Biggs officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Lions Club, Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
