Jene D. Kirby, son of the late Edgar Buck Kirby and Edith McFerron Kirby, was born on May 11, 1925 in Detroit, Mich. and died in the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on June 21, 2010 at the age of 85.

Mr. Kirby was a retired farmer, a veteran of the United States Army, and of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the VFW, Am Vets, a 60-year member of the Bernie Masonic Lodge #573, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

On March 28, 1948 he was united in marriage to Fern Smith in Essex. Mrs. Kirby survives of the home in Bloomfield.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William Patrick Kirby and wife Debbie of Dexter; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn Bowden and husband Raymond of North Little Rock, Ark.; by three grandchildren, Kay Davis and husband Darren, Jene Ann McGill and husband Mike all of Dexter, and Chris Kirby of Poplar Bluff; by two great-grandchildren, Jessica Davis and Matney Davis both of Poplar Bluff; one great-great-grandchild, Adyson Davis; one daughter-in-law Judy Kirby of Dexter; also by Ernie Richie of Pensacola, Fla., who was raised up in the family as Mr. Kirby's grandson.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jene Darrell Kirby.

Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 22. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday June 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Larie Burdine officiating. Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery in Essex with full military honors.
