George Leon Baker

George Leon Baker, son of the late William S. Baker and Florence Kirby, was born on Oct. 23, 1917 in Dexter and departed this life at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Dec. 1, 2011 at the age of 94.

Baker was a member of the Essex United Methodist Church, Bloomfield Masonic Lodge, and Essex Lions Club. He was a sports fan and always followed the St. Louis Cardinals and Mizzou Tigers. George loved to travel and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He liked sitting on the front porch visiting with family and friends. George never let a day go by that he did not make a special trip to Wal-Mart for "something". Baker was a resident of Essex, Mo.

On Oct. 2, 1939, he was united in marriage to Ruth Virgina Taylor in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 2000.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Olivia Ann Zunkel and Doug Zunkel of Vancouver, Wash.; by two grandchildren, Kenneth Baker Zunkel of Knoxville, Tenn. and Lea Ann Metting and husband Kenneth Metting Jr. of Austin, Texas; also by one great-granddaughter, Bonnie Taylor Metting, of Austin, Texas.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, John Dale Baker, R.D. Baker, Gervis Baker, Homer Baker, and Ralph Baker; also by one sister, Opal Wrinkel.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from Noon until 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 3, 2011. Funeral services will then be conducted on Saturday Dec. 3, 2011 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Roy Sherfield and Rev. Ernie Rodgers officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
