BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Kelly connected on 11 3-pointers but it still wasn't enough as the Bloomfield Wildcats picked up a 54-50 win on Senior Night.

Bloomfield held a slim one-point lead heading into the second half, but the Wildcats limited Kelly to just seven points in the third to build a lead that would stand up until the final buzzer.

Kelly (4-16) didn't score a two-point basket in the second half, but was 7-of-19 from behind the arc over the final two quarters and 11-of-26 for the game. The Hawks had just seven conventional field goals on the night and shot 18-of-54 (33 percent) for the game.

Bloomfield got off to a quick start, while the visiting Hawks struggled in the early going.

"It was one of those things early on," Kelly coach Josh Eftink said after the game in Bloomfield's historic gymnasium. "They haven't played in a gym like this. It's a different type of gym to shoot in if your not used to it with the background and stuff.

"So I told them that if we keep moving the ball around and get good open shots, we'll get back in the game, so that's kind of what happened in the second quarter we started shooting the ball a little better."

It was somewhat of a role reversal in the second as Bloomfield went cold and Kelly heated up. The Wildcats led 16-9 after the first before the Hawks cut the lead to one going into half-time, 29-28.

The second half was all about the trey for the Hawks, while the Wildcats continued to apply pressure and look inside for high-percentage shots.

"Early on we got a lot of back-door lay-ups, but when they went zone, they gave up a lot of open shots for the three," Eftink said. "We just didn't make enough of them."

Bloomfield got balanced scoring as the team improved to 13-13 on the season. Thomas Sanders led the way with 11 points, while Tom Forkum and Brett Ruch each netted 10. Adam Vandiver chipped in with nine while Zach Pounds scored seven.

Bloomfield will next be in action Monday in district play.

Bernie upends state-ranked Holcomb

HOLCOMB, Mo. -- The state-ranked Holcomb Hornets suffered its first loss of 2012 Tuesday night to the Bernie Mules.

Holcomb, which had won 14 straight games since losing to Bernie on Dec. 29 of 2011, led by one after three quarters Tuesday. The Mules outscored the Hornets 18-9 in the fourth period to collect a 56-48 victory.

"It was nice to see our kids get a win tonight," Bernie coach Brad Botsch said. "They work hard and I felt were really bought in and focused all night. As inexperienced as we are, we don't have much wiggle room as far as mental lapses go and still be able to compete and win. Tonight, we did a good job of executing and playing with poise."

David Baker, which finished the contest with 29 points for the Mules, recorded all seven of Bernie's 2-pointers in the first half. Troy Kirkpatrick drained three of Bernie's five 3-pointers and finished the game with 11 points.

Jamie Massey recorded half of Holcomb's 48 points and calculated field goals in every quarter. Michael Glover added 11 points for the Hornets.

"We didn't execute real well," Holcomb coach Seth McBroom said. "Credit their defense for that. We need to fix it and get back to what we do well."

Third-seeded Bernie (16-9) and second-seeded Holcomb (20-5) could meet in a Class 2, District 1 semifinal contest at Hayti next Thursday if both teams win their quarterfinal games in the eight-team district. Bernie leads the season series against Holcomb 2-1 and has won its Class 2 district each of the last three seasons.

Holcomb concludes regular-season play Friday at Senath-Hornersville. Bernie hosts Caruthersville in its final regular-season game Thursday.
