Annis Fortner, daughter of the late Wilber Fortner and Glena Atherton Fortner was born on October 25, 1936, in rural Bloomfield, Mo. and departed this life at the Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter, Mo., on August 31, 2012, at the age of 75 years.

Fortner graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1954 and retired from the State Of Missouri Family Services where she served as Secretary for many years. Annis was an active volunteer leader for a broad range of health, community, and family assistance organizations. She was a life-long Democrat and was active in leadership at the county, district, and state levels. Current Keller Library Board member, current Co-Chair of the SEMO Democrat Rally Committee Pac, former Mental Health Salad Luncheon Fundraiser, former Children's Place Board member, former board member of Creative Communities Corporation, former board member of the SEMO Health Network, current chair of the 25th District Democrat Senatorial Committee Pac, vice chair Stoddard County Democratic Committee, vice chair 150th Democratic Legislative District, former member of Caring Communities, Stoddard County Chair for the American Cancer Society, UCAN Committee fundraiser, former board member of Visiting Nurses Association, member of the Stoddard County Historical Society and many other community and Lutheran Church activities and fundraisers.

Fortner was a dedicated community and service activist and recently received the Humanitarian Award from the SEMO Rural Democratic Caucus for outstanding service to the State and her Community. She was past winner of many awards including the Missouri Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs Woman of the Year, Stoddard County Women's Democratic Club Annual Bess Truman Award, and the 8th Congressional District Woman of the Year. She was a resident of Dexter.

Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Doublin and Jack of Puxico, Mo; by two nieces, Paula Doublin of Allen, Tex. and Dana McCallister and husband Mark of Qulin, Mo.; by one great-nephew, Ryan McCallister; also by a host of neighboring friends.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 4:30 until 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter with Pastor Sue Welborn officiating. Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
