Middle School and High School students at Bernie were bussed to the south edge of town late in the school day on Friday, Nov. 9 to witness what might occur if they text and drive. After hearing of the dangers of texting and driving all week, students were provided an unnounced mock scenario in which a student who was texting ran a light, striking a fellow student's car and killing at least two fellow students. the student body lined up several feel from the mock wreck and silently witnessed the hysteria and raw emotion expressed by the driver and passengers when the "guilty" teen was arrested as friends lay dead and injured. Participating in the realistic drill were Bernie Police, Stoddard County EMS, Bernie Fire Dept. and Extrication Team, and recently elected Coroner Kenny Pope. The drill was sponsored by High School Student Council members. Several other photos of the mock wreck are available, but were not posted because of the graphic appearance of the mock accident.
