In just a little over a month, a new year will begin. The ham and turkey and all the holiday sweets will have taken their toll on a multitude of waistlines. Once again, though, the Regional Healthcare Foundation has a solution!

The 9th Annual Team Fitness Challenge will run from Jan. 10, 2013, through May 10, 2013, under the direction of LeVeda Scates.

Teams of four, male or female or mixed, should sign up on Jan. 10, 17, or 24 at the Regional Healthcare Foundation or by calling 624-1607, ext. 103.

The Fitness Challenge is a free incentive program for people who want to lose weight and/or live a healthier lifestyle. Team members weigh in each Thursday at the Foundation office at 215 W. Grant St. in Dexter between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Team members do not need to weigh in as a group.

Progress charts with team names only (not individuals' names) will be posted weekly. The percentage of loss per team is charted weekly.

"Individual weights are completely confidential and weigh-ins are conducted in total privacy," explained Scates, who has headed up the Challenge for several years.

Tips and incentives are offered throughout the program, but no official meetings are held. The Foundation does not promote any diet plan or regiment.

"The Challenge is

designed to provide encouragement and accountability for weight loss in an enjoyable format for the community," said Scates.

The first place team will split a $1,000 cash prize. The second place team wins $500. Third place winners will be awarded $250, and the individual who loses the most pounds will take home $250.

Weekly drawings will take place throughout the Challenge, and handouts with health information will be provided.
