Advance senior receives state and national recognition

The last two years have been busy ones for Advance senior Taylor Olin. This active high school student has been traveling to state and national FCCLA conferences.

"You need to calm down your activities this year," advises Taylor's mother, Misty Olin.

There is little chance that Taylor will be able to follow her mothers advice, however, as her interest in public speaking will offer her opportunities in several school activities, most notably her Family, Career, and Community Leadership Chapter and Future Farmers of America.

With school starting in a week, Taylor can settle down to her classes and her part-time job at El Mexicano restaurant, where she works as a waitress.

Taylor has been active in her school organizations since she was involved in Junior Beta.

"I would go to the conferences and see the officers, and I thought, 'I want to do that!'" says the ambitious teen.

In her quest for a state leadership position, she has had to answer difficult questions and give speeches before election committees. she recently interviewed former Missouri State Representative Dennis Fowler for a speech she was giving on the "right to Farm" amendment, which was voted on on Aug. 5, 2014.

Last year, she was FCCLA Vice-President of Community Service, and this year her title was Vice-President of Alumni and Associates. Part of her responsibilities involve getting businesses to partnership with the school program.

For the future, Olin hopes to be accepted into the EMT course at the Career and Technology Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Her career plans beyond high school involve the neonatal care field.

"I don't want to be a lawyer!" Olin says, when asked about some of her predecessors at Advance whose leadership expertise led them into the field of law.

It would seem that whatever field this talented young lady pursues, her poise and determination will stand her in good stead.
