Republican state office hopefuls come to Reagan Rally

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

Three announced Republican candidates for state office were in town Saturday night to speak to county Republicans about getting out to vote in the 2016 election. Catherine Hanaway, far right photo, has announced her intention to run for governor in 2016, while Will Kraus, middle photo, has announced for secretary of state and Eric Schmidt, photo at left, has announced for state treasurer. Kraus is a state senator from Kansas City while Schmidt is a state senator from St. Louis. Both were instrumental in passing the income tax cuts in the last legislative session and helped gain the needed vote to override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto. Both said the state has had Democrats in state office for too long and that Republicans need to work to see that the trend changes. Hanaway was first elected to the House in 1998 and was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. She said the super-majority held by Republicans in both legislative chambers had not carried over to state offices. She cited former President Ronald Reagan on several occasions. She said she stood for less government, was opposed to expanding Medicare and federal school standards (common core). She said she supported "right to work" laws. All three candidates announced recently their intent to run for office in 2016, an early announcement in an effort to raise more money for their campaigns. Reagan Rally was held at the Eagles Lodge and sponsored by the Stoddard County Republican Club. Money was raised through a silent auction at the event for county Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Also on hand was State Senator Doug Libla and State Representative Tila Hubrecht, as well as other local candidates and office holders.
