One might wonder, when looking up at the night sky on a 4th of July night, while watching the fireworks, why we use those to celebrate Independence Day. The history of fireworks dates back to as early as A.D. 600, when the Chinese used roasted bamboo to ward off evil spirits. The loud popping noise was supposed to scare them off. When the bamboo was roasted it would explode when heated because of the hollow air pockets in the wood.
