Lola Slaughter Waters

Lola Slaughter Waters, the daughter of the late Leo and Phebe Sherills Davis, was born at Zalma on April 6, 1911, and died at the Beverly Health and rehab in Dexter on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the age of 91. She had lived in Dexter since 1937 and was employed at Elder Manufacturing Company for 25 years. She and her husband later owned and operated restaurants in Dexter - Lola's Cafe, Cubs Cafe, LaHub Cafe and Ketch-A-Bite Cafe. She was a member of the General Baptist church in Zalma. In 1929, she married Melvin Slaughter and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1986. On April 14, 1988, she married Ben Waters and he also preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Juanita Shelton of Cape Girardeau and Myrtle Swallows of Dexter; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pat Gardener of St. Charles. She was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Monday with Pastor Keith Garland of Dexter officiating. Interment will be in the Hagy Cemetery, Dexter. Watkins and Sons Funeral Home of Dexter is in charge of arrangements.
