Lowell Russell Tanner, the son of the late Robert Esco and Etta Miller Tanner, was born in Calm on Dec. 25, 1923, and died at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on Sept. 30, 2002, at the age of 78. Mr. Tanner graduated from Couch High School and Arkansas State University, where he played for the Arkansas Greyhounds? Independent team. He taught math and physical education for thirty-five years in the Missouri schools of Couch, Risco, Bernie, Richland, and Pacific. He coached several area basketball teams including the 1964 Richland Rebels to the state championship where they won second place, ending with a season record of 35-1. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, and playing pool. He was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association. On May 2, 1942, he was married to Reva Evelyn Reed in Alton. Three children were born to this union: Russell Dale Tanner and wife, Jeanice of Bernie, Donna Louise Tucker and husband Harold of Oak Grove, La., Randy Ellis Tanner and wife Tammy of Dexter; five granddaughters and one grandson, Kimberly Flowers, Lori Daniels, and Brook Smith, all of Dexter, Brandy Judd of Monroe, La., Melanie Tucker of Oak Grove, La., and Tyler Scott of Dexter; and six great-grandchildren, Owen, Alexis, Ethan, Brett, Maci, and Andrew. He later married Ethel Marie Maples, who survives of Poplar Bluff; three step-children, Jim Eubanks of St. Louis, Harold Eubanks of Carbondale, Ill., and Ossey Eubanks of Charleston, Ill. Other relatives and many friends also survive. He was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Anastasia Flowers; one brother, Leamon Tanner; and two sisters, Lena Reed and Bessie Jones. Visitation will be held after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery near Dexter with Stan Dauck of Bernie officiating. Interment will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery near Dexter with Martha Duffie-Reynolds in charge of arrangements at the Watkins & Sons funeral Service in Dexter.
