James Walter Gates of Sikeston, son of the late Ernest James and Hazel Nance Gates, was born Oct. 24, 1950 in Matthews and died Wednesday, May 1, 2002 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident which occurred on Jan. 1, 2002. For 28 years, Mr. Gates was a skilled laborer for the Sikeston City Parks Department. On Nov. 22, 1991 he was united in marriage to Jessica Tidwell, she survives of the home. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Chris Gates of Sikeston; by one step-son, Berren Clark of Haleyville, Ala.; by one daughter, Ashley A. Gates of Sikeston; by two brothers, Charles Gates of Cabot, Ark. and Kenneth Gates of Sikeston; by four sisters, Sue Rickman of Kennett, Melba Sue Edwards of Dexter, Brenda Wilson of Bloomfield, and Junnie Gentry of Sikeston; and by one granddaughter. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Brittany Michelle Gates, who died Jan. 1, 2002; and two sisters, Linda and Evesta Gates. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 2 at the Nunnelee Funeral Home in Sikeston from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 3 in the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel with Rev. Frank Breeden of Morehouse officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery with Nunnelee Funeral Home of Sikeston in charge of arrangements.
