John Larry McGowan of Pagosa Springs, Colo. and former resident of Dexter, was born in Rolla, Mo. on Dec. 21, 1934 and lost a long battle to cancer, March 2, 2002 at the Mercy Medical Center in Durango, Colo., at the age of 67. He was the son Lillie Swanson McGowan of Buffalo, Mo. and the of the late John Leonard McGowan. On July 3, 1958 he was united in marriage to Ada Stephens in El Paso, Texas, who will continue to live on their "little piece of mountain" in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, John Larry McGowan, Jr. and wife, Marie, of St. Louis and James Stephen McGowan and wife, Melissa, of Bedford, Texas; by one daughter, Shannon McGowan Powers and husband, Peter, of Camp Hill, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Shelley McGowan, Devon and Collin Powers, Stephen, Matthew, Melinda and Catherine McGowan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Keith and Jeanie McGowan of Jefferson City and Pat and Faye McGowan of Bolivar; also by four nephews, one niece and a growing number of great nephews and nieces. Larry retired Dec. 31, 1999 from his position as District Sales Manager for Shelter Insurance. He considered the men and women of the Shelter agency force in Southeast Missouri among his extended family. He never considered retirement from his favored avocation-service to First Baptist Church of Dexter and later First Baptist Church of Pagosa Springs. Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 5. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Dismuke and Rev. Dan Sanders officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Dexter or to the Stoddard County Children's Home. PAID
