Dorothy Lee Delany Dean

Friday, July 16, 2010

Dorothy Lee Delany Dean was born in Cairo, Ill., just across the river from her grandparents' cotton farm and home in Stoddard County. She grew up in Gadsden, Ala., with her parents, Erie McColgan Delany, and A.G. Delany, and spent summers at her grandparents' place in Dexter. She developed a love for horses very early on, and her grandfather (J.W. McColgan) always made sure that she had ponies and horses of her own. She was a splendid horsewoman and loved to ride; she was also a talented artist, and her paintings of horses are quite wonderful. She very much enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing and was extremely knowledgeable about bloodlines.
