Wilma Smith, the daughter of the late William and Carrie Rister Klaffer, was born in Dudley on Sept. 29, 1922 and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on April 15, 2002, at the age of 79. Mrs. Smith had lived in St. Louis before returning to Puxico after her retirement as a manager with Atlantic Mills in St. Louis. She was a member of the Life Chapel Assembly of God Church in Puxico. On Sept. 16, 1939, she was united in marriage to Leo Smith in Fisk and he preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1999. Surviving are three sons, Melvin Leroy Smith of St. Louis, Gary Dean Smith of Warrenton, Mo. and Donald Wayne Smith of Puxico; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Beulah Cookson, Eva Lois Cookson and Mildred Hobbs, all of Puxico. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Carrie Juanita Smith and one brother, Cletus Klaffer. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico after 6 p.m., Thursday, April 18. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, April 19 in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Cookson of Springfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Puxico Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Home of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
