Barney Miller

Barney Miller, son of the late Robert Emmett Miller and Elizabeth Trotter Miller, was born on July 14, 1920, at Lutesville and died at his residence in Dexter on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at the age of 81. Mr. Miller was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dexter, and was the former owner and newspaper publisher of the Daily Statesman in Dexter. He was a member of the Missouri Press Association, past president of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, a 1998 inductee into the Missouri Newspaper Hall of Fame, member of the Dexter Kiwanis club, past president of the Dexter chamber of Commerce, former Elks Citizen of the Year, former member of the Dexter Zoning Commission, former member of the Dexter Library Board, a volunteer literacy tutor at the Mingo Job Corps, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was united in marriage to Marie Braidlow on June 6, 1942, at Rolla. She preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1994. He also was preceded in death by his parents; by one son, John Miller; by three brothers, Paul Trotter, Richard Trotter and Arthur Trotter; and by one sister, Rebeccah Erickson. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Miller of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Joe Miller of Jonesboro, Ill.; by one daughter, Annabeth Miller of Dexter; by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in the First United Methodist Church in Dexter with Rev. Fred Leist officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
