Remembering "Miss Green"
Recently as I was driving through an area I am in on a daily basis, memories came flooding once again. On this particular day, memories took me back to the year I was a fifth grader and a new student at our 'city' school. That was Central Elementary.
As I have shared with you before, I attended the country schools with many of you until the fifth grade when the country schools consolidated with the in-town schools. The building, which was Central Elementary has served well. First, for many years as a wonderful school for young children, and now serving our elder generation as a wonderful assisted living environment. What a great tribute to a man-made building.
As my mind began straying back in time to my fifth grade year, my memories took me to our classroom. Miss Green was our teacher and what a wonderful teacher she was. She was very kind and soft spoken, yet could be very firm. She had to be great because of some of the antics of her students, including me. One particular memory is that my hair was very long and I sat in front of Dale Worley. He was always tugging on my hair.
One particular day, Miss Green saw him in the act and said, "Kathleen, why don't you turn around and slap him?" Can you imagine a teacher being able to say those words in today's world? Dale jumped from his seat and began running around the class room with me right behind him. I can't remember how it actually ended, but what a fun memory. A couple more classmates that year were Deloris Quick Wamble and Deloris McGarity. I remember them introducing me to board games. I also remember what beautiful hair
Deloris Quick had. Hummn, I bet Dale tugged on her hair too. Little rascal.
One memory which is not so good was art class. Back then we had art once a week. I have never had any kind of artistic abilities and dreaded that class. One of my memories of art was sitting out back behind the school and sketching the apartment building across the street. That building is still there and still looks the same as it did some fifty-six years ago.
Later that night as I lay in bed, my memories kept going back and it was as if I could actually smell the dust of the playground which was across the street at the old armory building. I can't even begin to imagine how many miles we girls made jumping rope. Makes me tired just thinking about it. I can still hear the laughter and yells of the children as we heard the sounds of "The
Snow Cone Man" approaching. Since he had no legs, he drove a little motorized cart that was made especially for him. His name was Mr. Lawrence and he made the most of his disability and did it with a smile. In later years, I attended the church where he went, and his smile and his love for Jesus are still fresh in my memory all these years later. To this day, it just doesn't seem right to buy a snow cone from a van.
That day I sat in my car and took a good look at the old scout building, and I could see in my mind the scouts coming and going from that building. I don't remember when it was built, but I do remember when it was new. Today it sits in disarray and unkempt condition.
I sometimes wonder what I would do in my times of stress and distress if not for my good memories taking me away for a span of time. I hope you enjoy me sharing some of these memories with you. Many of you were there during some times of my backwards journeys.
See ya next time somewhere in a 'korner'.
