Retired....What's That!!??
When I thought about "retiring", I thought about the word "retire", and said to my self, "Self", just put on new tires and keep on driving. Driving on down the roads, those which now may be chosen, instead of having those routes chosen by fate, life, and other requirements.
I am able now, to begin again, to return to past avocations, and to experience this condition with all the anticipation of a squirrel in a hickory tree!!!
Growing up in the Bootheel, being schooled in two of the best school systems, being enabled in the pursuit of hobbies and past-times, and growing up as a Southeast Missourian, provided me with many avenues of pursuit outside of cirriculae and duties required of myself and my peers.
I can now pursue my hobby in rock-hounding, trudging through those old gravel pits, looking for a perfect agate, a nice fossil in the limestone road-cuts, and hiking in the Arizona high country with friends, digging in the old Fat Jack, and attending the many gem and mineral shows, both here in Missouri, as well as Tucson, Quartzite, and Wickenburg in Arizona.
A friend in the caving group here in KC, asked me what I wanted to do in caving, now that I have "all this free time". So I'll be locating new caves, doing inventories, mapping, and this winter, watching for, and hoping not to observe evidence of a disease which threatens our hibernating bat populations, just to name a "few" activities in store, as well as getting back in shape!!!!
In choosing to return to my past-times of yesterday, I've sought to fill days with productive, enjoyable and worthwhile endeavors, both for myself and for the conservation and preservation of cave resources in my native Missouri. Our cave resources and their protection directly affects ground water resources, the protection of species existing in no other part of this planet, and the abilities of our scientific community to access, study, and further the knowledge in those areas which may be found and studied in Missouri's cave systems, spring aquifers, ground water resources, and the geology of our state.
I'll have to jog my writing can, at least that one on top of my neck, for subject matter for this blog, and while trying my hand at this "blogosphere" thing, I hope to inform, to challenge, maybe aggravate, and perhaps add a discernible flavor, prayerfully palatable to the readers, and have fun doing it!!!!! Retired?????? "ain't happening now"!!!! molater, kkr
