More problems for Obama?Posted Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 8:07 AM
Wake up fellow bloggers and turn on your boob tube! There's controversy a'brewin'!!
Yes, yes, I know - I usually ban politics from my blogs, but, honestly, this is just too good to pass up! It seems that the Reverend Jesse Jackson was caught making an unkind remark about Barack Obama, when he thought the microphones were off. I won't repeat all the content, since part of it made an off color remark about a part of Obama's anatomy. (oh, no! I didn't DO that! I'm serious: I didn't realize the pun until after I typed it. Should I leave it?? Am I over the line? What will the boss say?....Leave it...delete it? Ah, let's push the envelope and leave it!)
Wow! Do preachers really talk like that?? Reminds me of Rev. Wright's tirade from his pulpit. Is it really a tradition for black pastors to talk like that? Somehow, I doubt it.
Anyway, the part that I CAN tell you is that Rev. Jackson accused Obama of "talking down" to blacks. In particular, he seemed to indicate that Obama was lecturing about "responsibility" in the black community. That's "talking down"?? I thought it sounded pretty responsible, myself.
When someone is accused of "talking down" to a group, it often means that they're using too lofty a vocabulary. I'm not sure that Obama should be criticized for not using the vernacular of the streets, if that's the intended criticism. Or maybe it's just that Rev. Jackson doesn't like being lectured from the pulpit by a man he doesn't consider his religious equal.
I admit that I'm not a big fan of Rev. Jackson. I remember what he did to the town of Cairo in the 60's, when he encouraged the violence which caused two-thirds of the inhabitants to move out and leave vacant stores and houses behind to sit like ghosts in a ruined landscape. That's a nice legacy to leave behind...
So, just what do you think is going on here??
