Taking the good with the badPosted Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 11:29 PM
The world seems to be changing at a rate with which Minnie has a bit of trouble contending at times. While some of the changes are welcome, some are not.
The fact that I can take 50 pictures on a digital camera, view them on the computer, punch in the ones I want copies of on Wal-Mart's photo website and pick up my prints an hour later in town…now that's a good thing.
I can choose some of my favorite tunes and download them onto a CD (ok, my son can do it)…and that's a good thing, illegal maybe, but still a good thing.
I can leave the house, go get the vehicle washed, make a deposit at the bank, pick up lunch, and my prescription (a MUST at my age), and never leave the confines of my comfy vehicle….it's a good thing.
I can find information on virtually any subject imaginable to mankind, from bunions to Bibles at the touch of my fingertips via the net….a very good thing.
I can elect to have a procedure done that will bring my very bad vision back to 20/20 and it can be done in the doctor's office chair in a matter of seconds…amazing! And another very good thing.
I can slide my little green card nearly anywhere and the cost of my purchases are automatically taken from my checking account…an excellent thing, especially for someone who forgets to carry cash.
I can type a message to my sister a thousand miles away and she can receive it in seconds….a downright miracle…and a very good one.
The fact that I can pick up a phone while driving home and dial my daughter to check and see how the ortho appointment for the grandchild went moments before…well, that's just downright miraculous.
I can remove the plastic lid on a can of coffee (a great thing in itself)…and then I can peel off a silver aluminum-type cover by pulling on a tab and wha-lah! Coffee! Amazing and quite welcomed.
When the alarm blasts me out of a deep slumber around 6 a.m., I am granted ten more minutes of peaceful sleep by simply fumbling and finding a wonderful little miracle called the "snooze." It's one of man's best inventions of all time. It can even be applied many times over each morning (if you set your alarm early enough) and it just keeps on working over and over…it's the best!
Now, there ARE a few modern conveniences that are NOT so welcomed in my book..
Speed bumps…those nasty little humps in the pavement when you least expect them. They're mean little devils that will send you sailing airborne if you're not careful (which I suppose I often am not)…they're not among my favorite things.
Digital television….the jury's still out on that one. Can't say that I can tell much difference, but I know that that is just resistance to change. Still, I like my 25" unit that still fits into my entertainment center (yes, some folks still have entertainment centers). I recall when they were all the rage, but then I recall when the family went from AM radio to a black and white console in the living room too. Hmmmmmm. So, you see, I HAVE come a long way.
DVD players…we know from past history that this little devil is a real challenge for Minnie and one that I could live without, but then I still have problems with a VHS player, so go figure!
Self-checkouts….Oh PLEEEEEEZE!!! Get one of those people in the blue vests and rather than have them welcome me to Wal-Mart (I don't want to be welcomed….I just want to get the 25 items that I grabbed when I only needed two things)…But, take that welcome mat person and put them on the register that has been designated to be "self"…I'm going to end up calling for help anyway, so they might just as well plant someone there from the start.
Movies containing four letter words that are broadcast on network TV in prime time…that's NOT a good thing, especially with children about.
And speaking of children….TV's in their rooms, like computers and phone are NOT a good thing. Keep both out in the open where there is supervision and where children can interact with the family….anything else is NOT a good thing.
And finally…a timely item…ten inches of rain in one day is definitely NOT a good thing, any way you look at it.
